Good morning, Boulder. We’ve got some news before you head out for the long weekend. Hopefully, it’s a long weekend for you.
Today, we’re focused on fun stuff like food and fireworks — and also fire danger, which isn’t fun but is important. To start, T.M. Spring has a July food roundup for you, providing insight into new restaurant openings, closures, restaurant-supported agriculture and more. Antonio’s Real New York Pizza, an Estes Park staple, recently opened another location in Longmont. The owners of Oak and Corrida opened a sports bar and restaurant on Pearl called The Colorado Club Saloon. If you want a say in which new slider The Post picks from eight contenders, swing by and vote.
Also food-related and restaurant-opening-related is a story by Sally Bell about Cozobi Fonda Fina, a new Mexican restaurant opening on Walnut Street on July 10. Named after the god of corn in Mexico’s indigenous Zapotec language, the restaurant hopes to cater to Boulder’s fickle customers with food that ties the owner’s heart to Mexico.
And fire-related: Don’t have one, or make sure it’s contained and fully extinguished. Following one of Boulder’s driest springs on record, county and federal officials have enacted broad fire restrictions across the county and nearby national forests. No fires are allowed except at developed campgrounds or recreation sites with established fire rings or grills. No fireworks either.

We’ll have tremendous weather to celebrate our independence tomorrow, with the pleasant conditions continuing into Friday. Today, however, temperatures will reach up to 90 degrees, which is a bit uncomfortable for me. As climate change continues, though, 90 degrees might soon be considered pleasant, so I’ll temper my whining.

Boulder’s newly named park
The nine-acre site along Violet Avenue between Broadway and 19th Streets, previously referred to as “the future park on Violet,” has officially been named “Primos Park” following extensive community engagement.
“Primos,” meaning “cousins” in Spanish, symbolizes the community’s vision of the park as a place for friends and family gatherings. The full name, Primos Park, a blend of Spanish and English, was suggested by local youth.
“This marks the city’s first park with a Spanglish name which resonated with many community members’ multi-lingual experiences,” said Parks and Recreation Director Ali Rhodes.
A ceremony to commemorate the new name will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, near the end of Appletree Court on the east side of the park. Boulder Reporting Lab reported on the park last year, including plans for flood mitigation. The city expects construction to begin in mid-to-late 2025, with the park opening in 2026.
Public invited to observe Boulder County’s 2024 election audit
Boulder County invites residents to observe the 2024 statewide primary election risk-limiting audit starting Tuesday, July 9, at 1750 33rd Street in Boulder. This “gold standard” verification method compares paper ballots with digital tallies to ensure accuracy. Space is limited, so the county wants you to RSVP to Vote@BoulderCounty.gov by July 8. The schedule includes an audit board kick-off, ballot pull and audit rounds from July 9 to July 11. The canvass board meeting will be held on July 11 to certify the election results.

Caribou Ranch trails open
The park up by Nederland is closed yearly from April 1 through June 30 to protect migratory birds and elk reproduction. That closure has ended, and human frolicking may begin. But leave your pets at home.
Louisville tennis court work
Renovations to the tennis courts at Mission Green Park in Louisville have begun, with an expected reopening in early fall.
A new concrete surface will be poured and new lines painted. The courts, previously closed due to disrepair, will soon offer an improved facility for the community.
