Lee Gilbert is a first-time candidate running for Boulder City Council on a single issue: opposing transportation projects that he believes make streets less safe.
His campaign centers on the Baseline Road Transportation Safety Project, which includes protected bike lanes and signalized crosswalks. The city describes Baseline as a critical transportation corridor with a history of serious crashes and says the changes are intended to improve safety.
At an Aug. 26 candidate forum hosted by the Boulder Chamber, Gilbert said he primarily travels around Boulder by bicycle or on foot. He argued that the Baseline project disregarded crash data and has made the road more dangerous for cyclists.
Gilbert acknowledged at the forum that he was “not as well acquainted with a lot of the local issues.”
Gilbert attended CU Boulder in the 1970s and has lived in his Boulder home for more than 50 years. He has worked for nearly two decades as an independent electrical engineering consultant specializing in firmware and software development, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Gilbert does not have a campaign website and could not be reached for comment.
