Good Friday morning, Boulder. Today’s BRL Today is sponsored by Pedestrian Shops, a locally owned and operated Boulder business ready to help you find your next pair from the world’s most comfortable shoe brands.
Leading today: Boulder Valley School District has repeatedly said no decisions have been made about closing schools. But emails obtained by Boulder Reporting Lab show officials were preparing for possible closures months before the district was scheduled to publicly recommend a plan.
The district was working with its teachers and support-staff unions on how employees would be reassigned if schools closed, analyzing its facilities and exploring uses for buildings that could become vacant. One email suggests officials may also have discussed closing two elementary schools and possibly a middle school. Jenna Sampson reports.
Why it matters: Declining enrollment is forcing BVSD to reconsider where and how it operates schools, potentially disrupting families and reshaping neighborhoods long anchored by their local schools.
District officials are scheduled to present a recommendation to the school board on Aug. 25.
Plus more, Below the Fold:

Near-record heat ahead of a stormier weekend
High pressure stays locked over Boulder this Friday, delivering the hottest day of the week as temperatures surge to around 97 — very close to the city’s Aug. 21 record of 98 degrees, set in 2023. Regarding rain, a bit more moisture will filter in compared to recent days. However, developing storms will remain high in the sky, leading to strong outflow winds and very little rainfall, offering a welcome reprieve from the heat but no help for our dry soils.
Tonight’s lows drop into the mid-60s.
Moisture will continue to rebuild through the weekend as southwest flow pulls deeper monsoon air back toward Colorado, enough to support scattered afternoon storms both Saturday and Sunday (and most of next week). It’s not a perfect setup. We’ll be beneath a potent ridge and on the edge of the best moisture. We must keep our expectations in check. Highs are set to ease back toward 90 this weekend, with increased clouds around and storm chances hovering near 40% each afternoon.
Wildfire near Boulder Canyon contained after briefly prompting evacuation warning
Boulder firefighters extinguished a wildfire near the mouth of Boulder Canyon on Thursday morning after it briefly prompted an evacuation warning near Eben G. Fine Park.
Boulder Fire-Rescue was dispatched at 9:19 a.m., and crews had water on the fire by 9:29 a.m. The evacuation warning, issued at about 9:44 a.m. for the area around the People’s Crossing Trailhead, was lifted at 10:04 a.m. No evacuations were ordered.
The fire was fully contained by 11:10 a.m. and burned about half an acre. No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged. All trails and roads were reopened by noon.
The cause remains unknown. The fire broke out amid unusually dry conditions and Stage 2 fire restrictions in western Boulder County.

Environmental group sues Trump administration over plan to dismantle NCAR
The Environmental Defense Fund filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Aug. 20 seeking to stop its attempt to dismantle Boulder’s National Center for Atmospheric Research.
The lawsuit follows a similar lawsuit filed in March by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, a nonprofit consortium of 129 universities that manages NCAR. Like UCAR’s lawsuit, the environmental group argued that the federal government violated the Administrative Procedure Act by failing to provide an explanation for the attempt to dismantle NCAR.
EDF also made a new argument that the Trump administration failed to conduct required reviews under the National Historic Preservation Act before attempting to close Boulder’s NCAR Mesa Lab. Read more on BRL.
Boulder to seek public input before deciding future of license plate cameras
Boulder will seek public input before finalizing a contract for automatic license plate readers that could replace its current agreement with Flock Safety, City Manager Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde told the city council Thursday.
“We believe that there is a conversation to be had before that contract will be finalized,” Rivera-Vandermyde said. “It’s a conversation certainly with the community, but it’s also a conversation with you.”
The city plans to release details about the public engagement process soon. The update came in response to questions from Councilmembers Taishya Adams and Ryan Schuchard, who are running for mayor and council, respectively.
The cameras have drawn growing criticism over privacy and federal immigration authorities’ potential access to data collected through Flock’s network. Boulder continues to contract with Flock on a month-to-month basis.
Juliette León Bartsch named Museum of Boulder executive director
The Museum of Boulder has promoted Juliette León Bartsch to executive director. Bartsch has served as the museum’s director of development and marketing for more than two years. She previously spent more than two decades curating the Boulder Library Concert Series and has held roles at the Boulder Library Foundation and Dairy Arts Center.
Bartsch succeeds Christopher Taylor, who is leaving to become executive director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust in Chicago.
Her appointment comes ahead of “Boulder MIXTAPE: Local, Live & Loud,” an exhibition exploring Boulder’s music history from 1955 to 2005. The museum will introduce the exhibition at its annual ENCORE! gala at the Limelight Hotel Boulder on Sept. 19.
Three-month Baseline Road closure near Dry Creek begins Monday
A stretch of Baseline Road near the Dry Creek Trailhead will close to all traffic at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, for a bridge replacement project expected to last through October.
The closure will extend between Westview Drive and 75th Street, and all travelers will be required to follow a detour. The Dry Creek Trail and trailhead will also close, with the parking lot used to stage construction equipment and materials.
The $4.1 million project will replace and expand the bridge, increase drainage capacity, install new guardrails and improve nearby wetlands.
Residents east of Dry Creek Trail can reach their homes from 75th and 76th streets, while those to the west can use Cherryvale Road. Western access to Nevin Platt Middle School will remain open.
RTD’s Route 225 will be detoured. Stops between Cherryvale Road and 76th Street will be unavailable during construction.
