The Boulder City Council and the Open Space Board of Trustees hosted a joint public hearing on Thursday, Feb. 22, to discuss the disposal of 2.2 acres of city open space to build the $63 million flood mitigation project on the property known as CU South. The hearing was one of the last opportunities for councilmembers and trustees to weigh in on the controversial project before making a critical decision next month.
The meeting was largely intended to gather feedback from residents and ask questions of city officials working on the project. Residents were generally divided over whether to dispose of open space to build the floodwall. No councilmembers or trustees asked any questions of city officials indicating they would vote against the open space disposal.
The city still needs state and federal permits. If all goes to plan, officials said they expect to break ground in early 2025. For more background on the project that has a long and fraught history, see our recent reporting.
