In a single morning, the Boulder Police Department responded to both a shooting and a stabbing. On Wednesday, July 3, the department addressed a stabbing near the city’s downtown and a shooting near Valmont and 28th Street.

Regarding the shooting, a suspect has been arrested. Officers charged the man with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, among other charges. The police department also reported that the same suspect had shot a man on Friday, June 28, in the 1600 block of 28th Street. According to the police, the victim and suspect in the June 28 shooting were acquainted, while the July 3 shooting is believed to have resulted from an argument between two men who did not know each other.

“Crimes such as these don’t happen often in our community. When they do, they generate fear and are extremely concerning to our agency, and we will take the perpetrators into custody as soon as possible,” Interim Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said in a news release.

The victims of both shootings were in stable condition on Wednesday, a department spokeswoman said.

Separately, around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, police responded to a reported stabbing under a bridge near Broadway and Arapahoe Avenue. The victim suffered serious injuries and is in critical condition at the hospital. Police arrested a suspect off the Boulder Creek path on 17th Street and charged him with two counts of first-degree assault.

These incidents come as crime rates in Boulder show mixed trends. Reports of property crimes, such as car parts theft, have decreased since a surge in 2021. However, reports of violent crime, including aggravated assault and intimidation, continue to rise.
